How To: Use a Derma Roller for at-home skin needling
The Derma Roller is a much-talked about, often misunderstood tool that can truly transport your skin to next-level greatness. Here we break down exactly how to get the most of it in 5 simple-but-effective steps.
It can look a little intimidating. It can look potentially painful. Yet our Derma Roller 0.25mm is neither of those things. A targeted at-home treatment for a multitude of skin conditions, you just need to understand what it is, what it does for the skin, and how to get the very best out of it. And that’s what we’re here for…
What Is A Derma Roller?
A Derma Roller is a hand-held device that is literally rolled across the skin’s surface to stimulate cellular renewal and refine skin tone and texture. Also known as skin-needling, clinical treatments will incorporate a professional-grade device (which contain longer needles) but we’re bringing to you a Derma Roller specifically for at-home use (with a shorter needle length) that’s both affordable and easy to incorporate into your existing institut skincare routine.
Our institut Derma Roller has been fitted with 600 surgical-grade micro-needles made of stainless steel. They’re just 0.25mm in length but long enough to be able to painlessly roll over the surface layers of the skin and get to where they need to stimulate Collagen production and cellular renewal.
What Does a Derma Roller Do For The Skin?
A Derma Roller is ideal for sun-damaged, prematurely aged skin, or those prone to pigmentation, congestion, and even acne scarring; it’s not suitable for highly sensitised or reactive skin. As you roll the device over your face, our Derma Roller painlessly penetrates the surface layers of the skin which helps to stimulate the natural cellular renewal process which significantly slows down as we age. This process helps to move expired skin cells on and bring fresh, new cells to the surface which instantly improves your skin’s luminosity. Hello glow.
This face-changing tool also helps to stimulate all-important Collagen production which gives your skin strength and structure, resulting in a firm but still plump look. It’s also particularly helpful in treating uneven skin tone and texture, refining the look of pores and acne scarring, and helping to clear congestion and breakouts.
By working our Derma Roller into your routine each week, you’ll also improve the absorption of any serum or moisturiser you apply to your skin afterwards. Bonus.
So Let’s Get Started
Derma-rolling is so worth the extra minute or three it will add to your skincare routine and we recommend that you do it anywhere between once and three times a week. You can use it all over your face, on your body to help minimize the appearance of stretch marks, and even on the backs of your hands to improve skin tone and texture.
STEP ONE:
Cleanse with a gentle formulation like our Gentle Cleanser. If you’re wearing makeup and sunscreen, we’d recommend a double cleanse to ensure you’ve completely removed any residue before you start rolling. Then pat your skin dry.
STEP TWO:
Gently roll the Derma Roller over your skin back and forwards in sections of the face, doing a couple of small horizontal strokes, followed by vertical strokes over the same area. You’ll notice your face will look a little flushed which is absolutely normal and to be expected. If your skin could do with some additional TLC, this is where we’d suggest you work in our Quick Fix Calming Sheet Mask to soothe and settle your skin (just 15 minutes will do the trick with your mask, then there’s no need to apply serum after).
STEP THREE:
Time for your favourite serum. If your skin is looking dull and fatigued, we recommend using our Rejuvenate 15 Serum to refresh and revitalize your skin. If you’re wanting to target pigmentation, sun damage, or mild congestion, then reach for Even Blend Serum to help boost exfoliation and cellular renewal to refine and clarify both tone and texture.
STEP FOUR:
Once your serum has had a moment to absorb, a layer of moisture will help to lock in those active ingredients. Apply your regular Moisture Defence to deliver antioxidant protection and long-lasting hydration.
